INTERVENTION GALLERY AT THE C&O CANAL
Transformation of an outdoor space through the study of photographs, maps, and physical attributes, such as thoroughfares, bounding edges, and phenomenological characteristics in order to design an intervention space that focuses on relationship across programmatic elements, organization, hierarchy, zones, public/private/intervention, and their relationship to the site.
THE SITE
The Canal House courtyard is a unique space that offers sunlight, shade, water, foliage, resting areas, walking areas, and views. I considered spatial variety, organization, hierarchy, zones, public/private/intersection, and how to best relate these elements to the site. My primary focus became hierarchy which I established through levels and zones while ultimately emphasizing the views of the canal. Zones were created by designing multiple levels that are organized in a linear fashion. By creating levels I was able to zone public/private spaces using scale. The larger the scale, the more open and inviting it became, establishing a public space. The smaller spaces are more intimate and establish private spaces. From the ground level, the expansion and contraction of the different levels drives the user through the space, inviting them to the second level while experiencing the views of the canal.
